RAP CHAIN
The Hip Hop Chain Reaction Game
Rap Chain is a dynamic card game that challenges players to think fast, name songs, and link them by artist or release year. Perfect for game nights, parties, or any gathering of hip hop lovers, Rap Chain brings the culture and competition to the table.
Objective:
The goal of Rap Chain is to keep naming songs that are connected by either artist or release year to the previous song mentioned. The game continues until a player can no longer think of a valid song, and the last player remaining wins the round. Points are awarded based on special actions during the game, and the overall winner is determined by reaching a set number of points.
Game Setup:
- Players: 3-8 players.
- Deck of Cards: The deck consists of:
- Song Cards: Each contains a song title, artist, and release year.
- Special Cards: These include Mic Drop(6), Turn-Tables(2), and Freestyle 5 Cards(4) with their own specific functions (explained below).
- Starting the Game:
- Shuffle the deck and place it in the center.
- The first player draws the top card from the deck and reads the song’s details aloud (song title, artist, and year).

Basic Gameplay:
- Naming a Song:
- The player who draws the card must name a new song that is connected to the song on the card by one of the following:
- Same Artist: The new song can feature the same artist as the one on the card.
- Same Release Year: The new song can be from the same release year as the one on the card.
- The player who draws the card must name a new song that is connected to the song on the card by one of the following:
Important: When naming a new song, the player must state the song name plus either the artist or the release year.
- Example: If the card says, “California Love by 2Pac, 1995,” the player can name “All Eyez On Me, 2Pac, 1996” because the connection is 2Pac as the artist.
- No Song Repeats:
- Once a song has been mentioned during the round, it cannot be repeated by any player.
- Next Player’s Turn:
- The game continues clockwise. The next player must name a song connected to the one just mentioned by the previous player (not the card that was originally drawn). The same connection rules apply: artist or year.
- Elimination:
- If a player cannot name a valid song within 30 seconds, they are eliminated from the round.
- After a player is eliminated, the last person to successfully add a link to the rap chain will draw a new song card.
- Drawing a New Card:
- If a player is stuck and cannot name a song, they may choose to draw a new card from the deck and start a new rap chain.
- 1 Point Awarded: The player who said the last song (the one that caused the next player to stumble) earns 1 point.
- Once Per Round: Each player can only draw a new card to start a new chain once per round. If they are stuck again later in the same round, they are eliminated from the round.
- If a player is stuck and cannot name a song, they may choose to draw a new card from the deck and start a new rap chain.
- Winning the Round:
- The last player standing after all others are eliminated wins the round and earns 10 points.
Special Cards:
1. Turn-Tables Card (Reverse + Wild):
- Action: When a player draws a Turn-Tables card, two things happen:
- The turn order is reversed (clockwise to counterclockwise or vice versa).
- The player who drew the card can name any song (as long as it hasn’t been mentioned previously in the round) to restart the game. The next player in the reversed order must then name a song connected to this wild card choice.
- Strategic Use: The Turn-Tables card gives players a chance to take control of the game by picking a song that might trip up their opponents.
2. Mic Drop Card (Lyrical Face-Off):
- Action: When a player draws a Mic Drop card, they initiate a Lyrical Face-Off with another player of their choice.
- The player who drew the card selects an opponent.
- After choosing an opponent, the player draws a new card from the deck. The two players must take turns reciting the lyrics to the song on the newly drawn card.
- Lyrical Showdown:
- The cardholder starts by saying the first line of the song.
- The opponent follows by saying the next line.
- The players alternate lines until one player fails to remember the lyrics or hesitates for too long.
- Winner: The player who successfully completes the lyrics wins the challenge and earns 3 points.
- Loser: The player who loses the challenge is eliminated from the round.
- Restarting the Round: The winner starts the next round by naming a song that connects to the song used in the face-off.
3. Freestyle 5:
- How It Works: When a player draws the Freestyle 5 card, they must draw the next song card and have 45 seconds to create a chain of 5 song connections on their own. Each connection must follow the normal game rules.
- Success: If the player successfully creates all 5 chain links within 45 seconds, they earn 5 points.
- Failure: If the player cannot make all 5 connections in time, they are eliminated from the round.
Optional Gameplay Rules:
- Challenge Rule:
- If a player believes the song mentioned by the previous player is not a valid connection, they can issue a challenge. The group votes to decide if the song is valid or not.
- If the group agrees with the challenger, the previous player is eliminated. If the song is valid, the challenger loses 1 point.
Scoring System:
- Points for Rounds:
- The last player standing in each round earns 1 point.
- Bonus Points:
- Mic Drop Card: Winning a lyrical face-off earns the winner 3 bonus points.
- Freestyle 5: If the player successfully makes all 5 connections within 45 seconds, they earn 5 points.
- End of Game:
- The game can be played for a set number of rounds (e.g., 5 or 10 rounds). The player with the most points at the end wins.
- Or the game can be played to a number of points determined and agreed upon by all players before the game begins (e.g., 10 points).
Penalties:
- Time Limit:
- Players have 30 seconds to name a valid song. If they fail, they are eliminated for that round.
- Breaking a Challenge:
- If a player issues a challenge and loses, they lose 1 point as a penalty.
Game End & Winner:
- Point Totals: To win the game, a player must reach a certain number of points, which will be agreed upon by all players before the game begins.
- Suggested Point Totals:
- 2-3 Players: First to reach 40 points.
- 4-5 Players: First to reach 60 points.
- 6-8 Players: First to reach 80 points.
- These are just suggestions, and players can modify the target point total based on their preferences.
Optional: Fun Penalties or Humiliations:
- To keep the game lighthearted and fun, you could include small penalties for players who lose challenges or fail to name a song. Examples include:
- Performing a hip hop dance for the group. (The Stanky Leg, The Dougie, or The Running Man)
